The
snow/slush/ice has melted and
refrozen so
many times now
that
children’s and pensioners’ and couples’
and dogs’
footprints/pawprints conspire
to create
an icy obstacle course
along the
canal.
If you
listen carefully you can just make out
the sound
of ankles gibbering in terror,
tendons
straining desperately
to avoid
the clutch of those ghostly extremities
that left
their treacherous impressions
so deep in
the innocent snow.
